Students from the UVigo talk about the Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry: video 1 | video 2 | video

Chemistry is the branch of science which studies the matter properties, composition and structure, as well as the transformations experienced through chemical reactions.

Chemistry is one of the sciences which contributes more to society’s well-being, as it plays a vital role in health and environment protection, in hygienic and sanitary conditions improvement, in qualitative and quantitative food procurement for every one and in the development of products which can improve our life’s quality.

Thanks to the chemists works we have polymers, plastics, paper, paintings, alloys, drugs, soaps, detergents, cosmetic products, pesticides, fertilisers, fuels and solvents. Water purification, pollutants and toxins control or new drugs and materials development are essentially based in chemistry.

Due to its permanent capacity for innovation, Chemistry will continue offering solutions to future challenges faced by our society and having a great impact on the progress of every human being activity field.

General objectives

The general objective of this degree is to provide students with an education which enable to exercise the Chemist regulated profession. Through continuous learning and critical reasoning, graduated will acquire skills on organisation, planning, analyse and synthesis to provide quality services for citizens.

Specific objectives

  • To instil in students an interest in the learning of Chemistry, which enable them to value its applications in different contexts and involve them in the intellectually stimulating and satisfactory experience of learning to study.
  • To provide students with a solid and balanced base on chemical knowledges and practical skills.
  • To develop in students the skills to apply their theoretical and practical chemical knowledges to the problem solutions in Chemistry.
  • To develop in students, through the Chemistry learning, a range of valuable skills both in chemical and non chemical aspects.
  • To provide students with a knowledge and skills base for employability in specialised areas in Chemistry or in multidisciplinary areas.
  • To build in students the ability to value Chemistry in the industrial, economical, environmental and social context.

Career opportunities

  • Students graduated in Chemistry can perform activities in the industrial chemistry, teaching and researching fields, and in other related with chemistry fields, like health sciences, environment, counselling and commercial management or labour safety and hygiene.
  • In the field of industrial chemistry, the chemists’ activities include drugs, food, cosmetics, detergents, fertilisers, pesticides, plastics, glasses, ceramics, concrete, paper and basic and auxiliary products for the industry researching, designing, developing, transformation, conservation, production and control.
  • In the field of services, chemists are related with labour risk prevention and industrial hygiene, dangerous goods storage and transportation, processing, storage and elimination of nuclear, industrial, agricultural and urban wastes .
  • The management field includes activities related with technical and commercial management, processes and products quality control and environmental quality control.
  • In both the public administration and in the private sector, chemists can carry out activities in chemical, clinical, forensic and biochemical analysis or quality control laboratories.
  • In the field of teaching, chemists are needed in Secondary Schools and in Baccalaureate, in Vocational Training and in Universities, as well as trainers in companies.
  • In the field of basic and applied research, chemists devote, among other tasks, to new materials design (catalysts, polymers, ceramics, intelligent materials) and to find new energy sources, computer assisted designed of new drugs, and to develop a sustainable chemistry which will contribute to the environment conservation.
