What is the MEET-Chemistry Programme?
The MEET-Chemistry Programme takes part in the MEET-UVigo Programme and is analogous to the MEET-Teleco Programme which has been taking place for various years in the School of Telecommunication Engineering. This programme was extended to the Faculty of Chemistry and to other centres in the University of Vigo, like the Faculty of Philology and Translation and the School of Mining and Energy Engineering.
The MEET-Chemistry Programme offers a triple opportunity:
- For the mentors
- For the mentees, because you are going to count on the support of other student who, although having more experience, is very close to you, and know your problems and difficulties in entering to the university first hand, and who will be willing to orientate you so that you can overcome them.
- For the Faculty of Chemistry because, on one hand, the mentors will improve their competences, raising their employability; and, on the other hand, the beneficial effects on the mentees will improve their integration, their motivation and their academic results. It is an opportunity, to sum up, to create an organization culture based in not only academic aspects.
What does the MEET-Chemistry Programme entail?
The MEET-Chemistry programme is a vital part of the Mentoring Action Programme (MAP) of the Faculty of Chemistry.
During years, only the teaching staff has acted like mentors in the Faculty’s MAP. From the year 2016/2017 on, students from the last years will also take part in the process of guiding new students. Another important change is that the people participating in the programme are specifically selected and trained for mentoring. The new students, mentees, are mentored by other students, mentors, and logically will improve the communication and the results. This idea has been corroborated with statistical data from the three editions in which this mentoring programme has been working in the School of Telecommunications Engineering.
With the collaboration of the Vice-chancellor of Academic Planning and Teaching Staff, a specific training for the volunteer students who have been selected to perform the mentor role will be provided. This training will be taught by staff specialised in the field of human resources.
From the perspective of the mentors, the process will happen in two stages:
- Training stage
- Mentoring stage
The training performed and the volunteering activity will be accredited. In addition to that, the granting of the ECTS credits for the mentors will be requested to the university.
Calendar for the training stage
The dates are not definitive, but there will be 6 training sessions on June during morning, lasting around 4,5 hours, and they will take place after finishing the exams in May. In September there will be 5 additional sessions to review the previous training and to work on communication and mentoring.
Through the academic year there will also be monitoring and orientating workshops for the mentors.
Note: the dates in September and the monitoring workshops will depend on the official university calendar. They will be communicated in advance.
Calendar for the mentoring stage
There will be 4 meetings each term for the mentors and mentees, at a compatible time. The exact dates will depend on the final academic calendar and will be communicated in advance.
Mentors’ commitments
If you sign up as a mentor, your exact commitments will be the following:
- To attend to the classes and training workshops.
- o lead the meetings with theirmentees and to cover the corresponding minutes.
- To attend and take part in the coordination meetings for the mentors.
Mentor’s requirements
There are certain requirements to be a mentor. We are not able to offer this training opportunity to all the students in the Faculty, so there will be a selection process among the students interested in take part in this programme. The basic conditions are:
- To be a 2nd or 3rd year student in the Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry.
- To be available for taking part during the mentoring stage (being incompatible, therefore, taking part in the Erasmus+, ISEP or Séneca mobility programmes during the year 2019/2020).
Students who are more advanced in their studies will have priority. If it is necessary, a personal selection interview may take place.
To sign up
If you want to be a mentor you must cover this short form (MEET-Chemistry). Once elected the candidates, they will be personally informed of the selection result.
